Background and objectives Any human action involves a certain environmental footprint and health organizations are not exempt (up to 8% of the total carbon dioxide emissions in European countries). Hemodialysis is a growing therapeutic line (think of four million people treated) along with the Chronic Kidney Disease. The objective of this article is to improve environmental influence by motivating professional and personal reflection about the "eco-dialysis" environment. Methods Description of the environmental footprint human and the footprint generated by healthcare organizations, with special interest in hemodialysis activity, evaluating their consumption of natural resources and generation of products with greater environmental impact, as well as specific environmental marks. Results Visualization of proposals for areas and improvement actions, feasible, practical, of environmental management in dialysis, focused on the reduction of its carbon footprint and its contribution to global environmental sustainability. Conclusions Health professionals in nephrology and renal care are in a privileged position to coordinate strategies for mitigating climate change in healthcare services: beneficial actions at the local level are already available. The "eco-dialysis" is being explored to promote a better environmental management in the healthcare activity and to be a reference to progress in the awareness and involvement in the sustainability and environmental care, both institutions and of the professionals dedicated to renal diseases.
