Abstract

Summary Meaning of care for the family caregivers of the dependant elderly patient in Matamoros Tamaulipas, México: a gender perspective. Introduction. The meaning of caring for an older adult life is a living process lived differently by caregivers and family caregivers, which is of the form of family organization, the required care, the care and support religious culture. Method. Qualitative study. Fourteen participants from Matamoros Tamaulipas, Mexico. Recruitment. Snowball technique. Data collection: in-depth interview. Data processed by discourse analysis in deductive process, determination of codes, categories and subcategories. Objective. Explore the dimensions of the meaning of caring for men and women, family caregivers of dependent elderly from a gender perspective. Results. Three dimensional categorical and eleven subcategories determine the meanings of care differs in men and women with inequity for women, influenced by the prevailing gender division of care: remuneration and rewarding feelings / ambivalent, being all the way home, unknown experience, transformation and stop being?, moral duty and resignation, get and stay there, exclusive, role playing, coaching and family support, loading / depletion and what to stop doing?, cope and ease the burden. Discussion: Caring is a social construct; determined motivation, care and impact alleviation load factor in the religious culture context, susceptible to structural changes. Conclusion: Meanings of care of the elderly by caregivers / is influenced by the prevailing system of family and care for women with inequity. Recommendation. Should assess the significance of differences in care of the elderly by caregivers / family as nursing professionals for organizing programs / interventions referenced provided that transcends gender in family, improve self-perception of meaning in caregivers / as and care they provide to elderly.
