Abstract

The literature suggests that educating in emotions leads to an im-provement in social interaction, mental health and well-being, not only for students, but also for teachers, who are more resourceful in dealing with different professional demands and the consequent psychological distress. Given the benefits of emotional education for the whole school community, the Emotional Skill-Training for Teachers (MADEMO) has been developed and implemented, ba-sed on the emotional intelligence model of Mayer and Salovey (1997). The aim of this study was to evaluate both the effects of the intervention program on the produced changes in the emotio-nal abilities and the teachers' own perception. 135 teachers between 22 and 62 years old participated in the study (M = 43,66; SD = 9,29), 104 were women (77%). A mixed methodology was used to evaluate the intervention, which allowed for the analysis of participant’s perceived learning and for exploring their subjective experience in greater depth. The results indicate significant learning experience in the four emotional abilities described by the emotional intelligence model, as well as the fostering of social interaction and personal and professional development. The results of the quantitative analysis complement the qualitative analysis, allowing for a more in-depth exploration of the usability of the MADEMO program for emotional education, addressing the real needs of teachers who demand resources to tackle the tasks involved in attending to and managing emotions in and out of the classroom.
