Résumé
Introduction: one of the main objectives of orthodontic treatment is to achieve an aesthetic smile. The perception of aesthetics can vary according to some factors of the observer such as the level of education, sex or age. The aim of the study was to analyze the change in the perception of smile aesthetics before and after orthodontic treatment. Material and methods: 253 patients who attended several private orthodontic clinics were selected to analyze a photograph of a smile with four dental alterations modified by software in different grades. These photographs were analyzed before and after the orthodontic treatment, assigning a score on a scale from 0 to 10. Results: there are significant differences in the perception of the interincisal diastema and in the gingival smile before and after orthodontic treatment in the general population. Sex influences the perception of the aesthetics of the smile since women are more critical with the interincisal diastema, the black triangle and the gingival margin of the upper central incisor. Similarly, age also influences this perception in the interincisal diastema and the black triangle. Conclusions: the perception of the aesthetics of the smile varies with the orthodontic treatment for some dental anomalies.
