This work analyses the phenomenon of “predatory journals”, their characteristics, publication processes, and illicit editorial practices, as well as the impact on, and consequences to researchers who submit manuscripts to them. It also stresses the importance of using strategies and resources to help identify such journals (blacklists and lists of approved publishers, information guides, tutorials, etc.), and the imperative need for universities to promote awareness to prevent these publi- shers from taking advantage of the intellectual property of third parties. Among the conclusions of the study is the lack of knowledge in the academic community about this growing phenomenon that threatens the value of academic integrity.
