Abstract

Objective: To know the knowledge and perceptions of healthcare professionals about kangaroo mother care (KMC) in Spanish neonatal units. Methods: Cross-sectional, observational and descriptive study using an online survey. Results: 331 professionals responded to the survey. 83.7% were trained in KMC. Regarding perceptions and barriers, there were no significant differences between professionals according to their training in KMC. The criterion with the highest exclusion rate, 82.8%, was hemodynamic instability. 55.3% said they had placed limitations on the kangaroo method due to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and 96.4% established that it would be useful to have a national consensus guide. Conclusions: Health professionals in Spanish neonatal units are trained in KMC and are familiar with its benefits, but there are still some perceptions that may interfere with the effective implementation of KMC.
