Resumen

Cognitive impairments are common in Intensive Care Unit patients and some of them may be caused by the critical illness itself or because of the institutionalization. The main objective of this study was to describe and analyse the different variables related to cognitive state of patients admitted to the ICU of Hospital Universitari i Politècnic La Fe in Valencia. Tests included situational variables combined with dependent variables from the Mini-Mental (MMSE), verbal fl uency (VF) and other variables such as the lenght of stay in ICU and the illness itself. This is a basic, non-experimental, analytical, correlational, cross-sectional and prospective study that was conducted from 1st April to 9th May 2014. Variables differences were found in gender and correlation between dependent variables: 2/3 of the subjects were males and the most common illness was cardiac disease followed by digestive and neurological disorders. The average age was 57 years and the lenght of stay in ICU 4.6 days. And the mean scores obtained for VF was 11.47 and 23.07 for the MMSE.
